US President Trump Declares No Federal Intervention in City Protests Unless Requested by Locals

US President Donald Trump has stated that the federal government will not intervene in the ongoing protests in some cities until requested by local authorities.

Speaking in Washington on Saturday, Trump mentioned that clear instructions have been given to Interior Secretary Kristi Noem, stating that intervention will only occur if federal assistance is needed. This statement from Trump comes at a time when his administration is facing widespread criticism after tightening immigration policies.Responding via social media, Trump clarified that federal agencies will not participate in the protests and riots occurring in weakly managed cities. However, he said that if federal government buildings are attacked, strict security will be implemented for those structures. He also stated that he has directed the deployment of immigration and border security agencies in a strict manner for the protection of federal property.

Previously, the Trump administration had deployed the National Guard and federal security personnel in cities such as Washington, Los Angeles, Chicago, and Portland. But this latest decision comes in the context of growing opposition to such steps.Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison and the mayors of Minneapolis and St. Paul have filed legal challenges, accusing federal immigration actions of violating constitutional rights. However, a federal judge refused to immediately halt the immigration actions while the case is under consideration. The Justice Department has described the case as legally weak and baseless.

The situation has become even more sensitive after two individuals were shot and killed by federal officials in Minneapolis in January. Following those incidents, thousands of people across the country, including in Minnesota, took to the streets to protest against federal actions.Trump administration’s border affairs chief Tom Homan has also indicated that if state and local governments cooperate, the number of immigration security personnel in Minnesota could be reduced, which is seen as an effort to reduce tensions there.
