Canada Lets Some Work Permit Holders Study Up to 6 Months Without a Study Permit

4 September 2026. Canada. A new temporary public policy from IRCC lets foreign workers who hold a valid work permit study in a program of 6 months or less without getting a study permit.

Key conditions

• The study must last 6 months or less, or end before the work permit expires, whichever comes first.
• Workers in Quebec do not need a Quebec Acceptance Certificate (CAQ) for eligible studies.
• Full-time study time does not count as Canadian work experience for Express Entry.
• A co-op placement with a different employer or occupation needs a new employer-specific work permit first.
