Work-hour limits by country in 2026

  • Australia: 48 hours per fortnight while your course is in session, unlimited in scheduled breaks.
  • UK: 20 hours a week in term time at degree level, 10 hours below degree level, full time in official vacations. A week runs Monday to Sunday.
  • Canada: 24 hours a week off campus during academic sessions, unlimited in scheduled breaks.
  • USA (F-1): up to 20 hours a week on campus while school is in session. Off-campus work needs authorization such as CPT or OPT.

How to use the student work hours checker safely

  • Count every job, including one-off and weekend shifts.
  • Keep your own log of start and finish times, and compare it with your payslips.
  • Check your school calendar to confirm a break is an official one.
  • If you are over the limit, reduce hours straight away. Going over can put your visa at risk.
