International Student Jobs in Canada 2026: Work Hours, Pay and the Real Job Market

Part-time work rules for international students: working a campus shift

Finding international student jobs in Canada is harder than it was a few years ago. Youth unemployment was 12.9% in August 2026, and many students compete for the same entry-level roles. Here are the rules, the real numbers and practical ways to find work.

International student jobs Canada 2026: student working a campus dining shift

Last checked: 29 September 2026. Figures come from IRCC and Statistics Canada. This is general information, not immigration or employment advice.

How many hours can international students work?

  • Up to 24 hours a week off campus during academic sessions.
  • Unlimited hours during scheduled breaks, such as summer and winter holidays.
  • You can have more than one job, but the 24 hours is the total across all jobs.

Working more than 24 hours during term breaks your study permit conditions and can affect your status.

Who cannot work off campus

To work off campus you must be a full-time student at a designated learning institution, in a program of at least 6 months that leads to a degree, diploma or certificate, have started your studies, and have a Social Insurance Number (SIN). Students enrolled only in ESL or FSL programs, or only in general-interest or prerequisite courses, cannot work off campus. See how to get a SIN.

The 2026 job market in numbers

Statistics Canada’s August 2026 Labour Force Survey (released 4 September 2026):

  • National unemployment: 6.4%.
  • Youth (15 to 24) unemployment: 12.9%, up 0.3 points.
  • Returning students (15 to 24): 15.6% unemployment in August 2026, down from 16.9% a year earlier.
  • There were 501,000 job vacancies in July 2026.

There is no official 2026 unemployment figure just for international students, and competition for international student jobs in Canada is strongest in big cities. Anecdotal reports from students in places like Brampton and the Greater Toronto Area are often worse than the averages suggest.

How to find international student jobs in Canada

  • Get your SIN early, as soon as you arrive and are eligible.
  • Check on-campus jobs first: libraries, dining, IT help desks and research roles.
  • Make a Canadian-style resume: short, focused on skills, no photo.
  • Apply in person to local shops and restaurants, and use your school’s career centre.
  • Network: many jobs come through classmates and community groups.
  • Avoid cash jobs. Working off the books has no protection and can break your permit conditions.

After graduation: what former students earn

According to an IRCC briefing, median entry earnings for Canadian Experience Class immigrants were $60,600 in 2023. Median entry earnings for all recent immigrants fell 10.6%, which IRCC called the largest decline since 1991. Your first job after graduation matters for both income and permanent residence.
