EU Migration and Asylum Pact: In Force Since June, With Gaps Remaining

Since 12 June 2026. European Union. The EU Pact on Migration and Asylum is now fully in force. It is the biggest overhaul of EU asylum rules in years and affects everyone arriving at the EU’s external borders.

What changed

• Screening: identity, security and health checks at the external border within 7 days (3 days if already inside the EU). The Eurodac database now also stores facial images.
• Border and asylum procedures: faster, more uniform procedures and common reception standards.
• Solidarity mechanism: member states share responsibility through relocation, money or operational support, replacing parts of the old Dublin system.

Implementation

A European Commission progress report in May 2026 found gaps in IT systems and facilities in several countries. Rights groups have raised concerns about detention and accelerated procedures.

What it means for you

For students and workers with proper visas, day-to-day entry is unchanged. The Pact mainly affects irregular arrivals and asylum seekers.
