1. Report to your international student office
Check in with your DSO and attend international student orientation. Your school must register you in SEVIS after you arrive. Missing this step can put your status at risk.
2. Get a U.S. phone number
Prepaid plans are easy to set up with just your passport. A local number is needed for bank accounts, job applications and two-factor logins.
3. Open a bank account
Many banks near campus open accounts for international students with a passport, I-20 and proof of address. Ask your student office which banks other students use.
4. Get your student ID and set up campus accounts
Activate your university email, learning portal and campus ID card. Most important school communication will come through your university email.
5. Learn your way around
Find the library, health center, grocery stores and bus routes. Many campuses offer free or discounted public transport for students.
