Japan Visa Renewal Fee Rises from 1 October 2026: New Yen Rates

The Japan visa renewal fee went up on 1 October 2026, when Japan’s Immigration Services Agency (ISA) replaced the old flat fee with charges based on the period of stay granted. A renewal or change of status at the counter used to cost 6,000 yen. It now costs between 10,000 yen and 75,000 yen, and permanent residence rises from 10,000 yen to 200,000 yen.

What changed
The ISA says the fee now depends on the period of stay granted. In plain terms, a longer visa costs more.
According to the ISA fee document, the new fees for extension of period of stay and change of status of residence are:
| Period of stay granted | At the counter | Online |
|---|---|---|
| 3 months or less | 10,000 yen | 10,000 yen |
| Over 3 months to 6 months | 18,000 yen | 15,000 yen |
| Over 6 months to under 1 year | 25,000 yen | 21,000 yen |
| 1 year | 33,000 yen | 27,000 yen |
| Over 1 year to under 3 years | 48,000 yen | 42,000 yen |
| 3 years to under 5 years | 64,000 yen | 56,000 yen |
| 5 years or more | 75,000 yen | 65,000 yen |
The ISA online fee page adds a small settlement charge of 330 yen or 550 yen to online payments. It also says online fees are now paid by convenience store or bank payment, including internet banking, instead of revenue stamps. Credit cards and QR code payments are not accepted.
Who is affected by the Japan visa renewal fee change
Every foreign resident who applies to extend their stay, change their status of residence, or get permanent residence from 1 October 2026 is affected. This includes students, Specified Skilled Workers, technical intern trainees, engineers and family members.
The ISA says some people can get the fee reduced or waived, but the categories listed are narrow. They include diplomatic and official visa holders, people named by ministry regulation, and refugees or people with complementary protection who face serious financial hardship.
What it means for Nepali workers and students in Japan
Nepali and Indian students in Japan usually renew their student status more than once during a language school or college course. Workers on Specified Skilled Worker or work visas also renew regularly. Each renewal now costs several times more than before.
For example, a renewal that grants a period of over 1 year but under 3 years now costs 48,000 yen at the counter, compared with 6,000 yen before. A student who changes to a work status after graduating will also pay the new change of status fee.
Families should include the Japan visa renewal fee when they calculate the total cost of studying or working in Japan.
What to do now
- Check your residence card for your current expiry date and plan your renewal budget early.
- Find out what period of stay you are likely to be granted, as this decides the fee band.
- Consider applying online if you are eligible, since online fees are lower in every band except the shortest.
- Ask your school or employer if they help with renewal costs. Some employers may cover fees, but this is not required by the ISA pages we read.
- Keep payment receipts. Online payment now uses convenience store or bank settlement, not revenue stamps.
What we don’t know yet
- The ISA pages we opened did not say exactly how the fee is chosen when the period of stay granted differs from the period requested. Check with your regional immigration office.
- We did not confirm the new re-entry permit fees on the ISA pages we opened, so we have not listed them.
