UK January vs September Intake: What Nepali Students Should Know

For the UK January vs September intake, the visa rules are the same: one Student visa, the same CAS process, the same 3-week standard processing time and the same Graduate visa. What changes is timing. You can apply up to 6 months before your course starts, the higher living-cost amounts apply to applications made on or after 30 November 2026, and any Graduate visa applied for from 1 January 2027 lasts 18 months, whichever intake you choose.

What is actually different (and what isn’t)

“Intake” is a university word, not a visa word. The Home Office does not have a separate January route. The table below shows how the official rules on GOV.UK play out for each start date.

Visa timing for each intake

GOV.UK says that from outside the UK the earliest you can apply is 6 months before your course starts, and the course and CAS page says you must apply within 6 months of receiving your CAS. Standard decisions usually take 3 weeks, counted in UK working days from your biometrics appointment.

Arrival: if your course lasts more than 6 months, you can travel up to 1 month before it starts; if it lasts 6 months or less, up to 1 week before. Your course start date is the one on your CAS, so a “January intake” could mean any date in January or even late in the month.

Working backwards for a January 2027 start, a Nepali student needs to fit in the offer, any credibility interview, deposit, CAS, TB test, 28 days of funds and the 3-week decision, with the Christmas period in between. For September 2027 you have much more runway. Our step-by-step guide to applying from Nepal lists each stage.

The 30 November 2026 money change

This matters most for the January vs September intake decision this year. The Statement of Changes HC 584 raises the Student visa living-cost amounts from £1,529 to £1,570 a month (London) and from £1,171 to £1,203 (outside London), taking effect on 30 November 2026. Applications made before that date are decided under the rules in force on 29 November 2026.

9 months of living costsApply before 30 Nov 2026Apply on or after 30 Nov 2026
London£13,761 (about Rs 27.93 lakh)£14,130 (about Rs 28.68 lakh)
Outside London£10,539 (about Rs 21.39 lakh)£10,827 (about Rs 21.98 lakh)
NPR at the NRB selling rate, 17 Oct 2026 (£1 = Rs 202.99). Course fees still owed are added on top.

Every September 2027 applicant will be on the new amounts. A January 2027 applicant who already has a CAS and 28 days of funds could apply before 30 November, but only if everything is genuinely ready. Never rush an incomplete application to save the difference. Remember the 28-day period must end within 31 days of the application date. Plan the rupee total with our student visa money calculator.

Graduate visa: does the intake matter?

The GOV.UK Graduate visa page says the visa lasts 2 years if you apply on or before 31 December 2026 and 18 months if you apply on or after 1 January 2027. PhD and other doctoral graduates get 3 years. Anyone starting a course in January or September 2027 will finish after that date, so both intakes get the same 18 months (or 3 years for a doctorate).

The eligibility rules are also identical:

  • Time studied in the UK. For a course of 12 months or less, you must have studied in the UK for the whole course. For a longer course, at least 12 months.
  • Completion reported. Your university must tell the Home Office you have completed the course. You do not need to wait for graduation or the certificate.
  • In the UK, before expiry. You must be in the UK and apply before your Student visa expires.
  • Cost. £937 application fee (about Rs 1.90 lakh) plus the health surcharge, usually £1,035 a year (about Rs 2.10 lakh).

What the intake does change is when your Graduate visa period falls. Your course end date (on your CAS) decides when you can apply and therefore when your 18 months run. Compare it with the jobs market and any switch you are planning; see UK Graduate route vs Skilled Worker.

UK January vs September intake: pros and cons

We don’t quote “acceptance rate” or “job” statistics for intakes, because no official source publishes them by intake for Nepali students. These are practical trade-offs to check against your own offers.

September intake

  • Pro: if your preferred course runs only in September, this is your only option, so check the course page first.
  • Pro: more months to arrange funds, sponsor papers, TB test and CAS calmly.
  • Con: if you are ready now, waiting for September means a longer gap. Be ready to explain it; see study gap explanation.

January intake

  • Pro: you don’t lose most of a year if your results or documents came late.
  • Pro: a chance to apply under the current funds amounts if you can apply properly before 30 November 2026.
  • Con: not every course offers a January start. Check the course page or ask admissions in writing.
  • Con: a tight timeline over the Christmas period, with less room for a delayed CAS or a request for documents.
  • Con: some scholarships may have deadlines tied to September. Check each one.
  • Check: the university’s term and vacation dates for a January cohort, and how they affect part-time work.

For Nepali students and families

  • Results timing. If your bachelor’s transcript is not ready, a September start may be the safer target. Ask the university what it accepts and by when.
  • Funds in a Nepali bank. Fixed deposits, education loans and property-backed sponsorship take time. If your loan or sponsor papers will not be ready a month before a January deadline, aim for September.
  • Don’t let an agent push an intake. The visa rules are the same for both. Choose based on your readiness, not on a commission.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Believing January students get a shorter or different visa. They don’t.
  • Assuming the Graduate visa is still 2 years. From 1 January 2027 it is 18 months (3 years for doctorates).
  • Holding funds for 28 days but letting the statement go older than 31 days at application.
  • Booking flights more than 1 month before the course start date.
  • Applying with a CAS that is more than 6 months old.

What to do next

  1. Confirm in writing which intakes your course runs and the exact start date.
  2. Count back: CAS, TB test, 28 days of funds, 3-week decision, travel.
  3. Decide whether you can realistically apply before 30 November 2026 for January; if not, plan with the new amounts.
