What changed in UK student visa applications
The Home Office publishes monthly figures on entry clearance visa applications. These count people who apply from outside the UK to come for work, study or family reasons. They are applications, not visas granted.
The release published on 10 September 2026 covers the period up to the end of August. August is the busiest month of the year for student applications, because most courses start in September. The Home Office notes that sponsored study visas “follow seasonal patterns, peaking in August”.
Main points from the release:
- Sponsored study main applicants in the year ending August 2026 were 360,700, which is 16% lower than the year ending August 2025.
- Student dependant applications were 17,000, which is 22% lower. The Home Office links low dependant numbers to rules from 1 January 2024 that stop most students from bringing family members.
- Work routes fell further. Skilled Worker main applicants fell 43% to 26,900, and Health and Care Worker main applicants fell 65% to 7,600.
- Family visa applications fell 20% to 63,800.
ICEF Monitor, which analyses the monthly data, reported that August 2026 on its own saw about 99,500 main study applicants. That is around 20,800 fewer than August 2025 and the lowest August figure since 2022. It also reported that applications across June to August were 18% lower than the same period in 2025.
Who is affected
These are statistics, not a rule change. No one’s visa conditions change because of them. But the numbers show the market Nepali and Indian students are now applying into.
Universities depend on international fees. When UK student visa applications fall, some universities respond by changing entry requirements, scholarships or the countries they recruit from. Others become stricter, because the Home Office is tightening its sponsor compliance rules. In June 2026 the government said universities will need a visa refusal rate below 5% from summer 2027.
What it means for Nepali and Indian students
The monthly release does not break figures down by nationality. So we cannot say from this data how many Nepali or Indian students applied in August 2026. The Home Office says nationality detail is in its quarterly “Immigration system statistics”.
What the numbers do suggest:
- There is less competition for places at some universities, but not necessarily easier visas.
- Universities are under pressure to keep refusal rates low, so expect closer checks on funds, academic history and gaps in study.
- Plan your money carefully. Our student visa money calculator helps you estimate the total in Nepali rupees.
What to do now
- Check your university’s current status and recent news before accepting an offer.
- Prepare complete financial evidence well before your CAS is issued.
- Explain any study gap clearly and keep supporting documents ready.
- Apply early for January 2027 intakes so you have time to respond to any extra questions.
- Watch for the next Home Office release on 8 October 2026.
What we don’t know yet
- Exact figures for Nepal and India for August 2026. These will appear only in later quarterly statistics.
- How many of these applications will be granted. The monthly release counts applications only.
- Whether falling UK student visa applications will lead the government to change policy. The Russell Group has called for more stable policy, according to The PIE News.
