On-campus jobs for F-1 students are the easiest legal way to earn money while studying in the USA, but only if you follow the rules.

Almost every Nepali student in the USA asks the same question soon after arriving: “Can I work?” The answer is yes, but only within specific rules. Breaking them can cost you your F-1 status.

What counts as on-campus work

On-campus jobs are positions on your school’s premises where the school is the employer, or with on-location commercial firms that directly serve students, such as the campus bookstore or dining services. Common examples include library assistant, dining hall staff, IT help desk, and research or teaching assistant roles.

Hour limits

• During the academic session: up to 20 hours per week.
• During official school breaks and summer vacation: full-time work is generally allowed if you are continuing your studies next term.

What you cannot do

• Work off-campus without authorization (such as CPT or OPT)
• Take cash jobs at restaurants, gas stations or stores off campus
• Drive for ride-share or delivery apps as an F-1 student without work authorization
• Do freelance work for U.S. clients without authorization

Unauthorized work is one of the most serious F-1 violations. It can make you ineligible for future benefits like OPT or a change of status, and it is very hard to fix.

How to find on-campus jobs

• Check your university’s student employment portal regularly
• Visit the career center for help with a U.S.-style resume
• Ask professors about research or teaching assistant roles
• Apply early; good positions fill fast at the start of each semester

After you get the job

You will need a Social Security Number for payroll. Your DSO and employer will give you the letters needed to apply at the Social Security office.
