Health Insurance for International Students: USA, Canada, UK and Australia Explained

A single hospital visit abroad can cost more than a semester’s rent. That is why health insurance for international students is required or strongly expected in every major destination. The systems are very different, though.

| Country | How students are covered | Cost basis |
|---|---|---|
| USA | Most universities require insurance, usually through the school’s student health plan unless you prove equivalent cover | Set by your university; often billed with tuition |
| Canada | Depends on the province. Some include international students in provincial health care, others use school or private plans | Varies by province and school |
| UK | You pay the Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS) with your visa and can then use the NHS | £776 per year for students |
| Australia | Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) is required for your whole stay | Bought from an approved OSHC provider |
USA
There is no national health system for students. Check your university’s insurance requirement and waiver rules before arrival, and learn the difference between the campus health centre, urgent care and the emergency room.
Canada
Coverage depends on the province you study in. Some provinces cover international students (sometimes after a waiting period), while others rely on mandatory school plans. Check your school’s international student office for exactly what applies to you.
UK
The IHS is paid when you apply for your visa (£776 per year for students, charged for the length of your visa). It gives you access to NHS services on broadly the same basis as residents. Some treatments, such as dental and prescriptions in England, may still cost extra.
Australia
OSHC is a visa condition. You must keep adequate health insurance for your whole stay, and a lapse can breach your visa conditions. Compare approved providers for price, waiting periods and hospital cover.
Checklist before you fly
- Know what your plan covers: doctor visits, hospital, emergencies, mental health, prescriptions.
- Save your insurance card and emergency number on your phone.
- Bring prescriptions and a doctor’s letter for any medication you carry.
- Find the nearest clinic to your accommodation.
