How Much Bank Balance Do You Need to Study Abroad? USA, Canada, UK and Australia Compared

One of the first questions Nepali students ask is: how much bank balance do you need to study abroad? Each country sets its own rule, and the living-cost amount is always on top of your tuition. Here is how the USA, Canada, the UK and Australia compare.

Checked against official sources in September 2026. Rules, fees and amounts change, so confirm on the official pages linked in this guide before you act. This is educational information, not legal or immigration advice.

Why the source of money matters as much as the amount

Officers in every country want to see where the money came from. A large deposit made just before you apply, with no explanation, is a common red flag. Keep records of salary, business income, rental income, loan approvals or the sale of property.

Accepted proof (general)

  • Bank balance certificates and statements
  • Education loan approval letters
  • Scholarship or assistantship letters
  • Sponsor letters with proof of the sponsor’s income and relationship to you
  • Canada only: a Guaranteed Investment Certificate (GIC) from a participating Canadian institution

Nepal-specific steps

  • Get your NOC from MoEST before transferring fees.
  • Ask your bank for a balance certificate in the currency and format your destination expects.
  • Keep the balance steady during the holding period, especially for the UK’s 28-day rule.
