Sponsor Documents for Study Abroad from Nepal: 2026 Checklist

Sponsor documents for study abroad from Nepal prove three things: who is paying, how that person is related to you, and where their money comes from. In practice that means a relationship verification certificate from the ward office, the sponsor’s ID, bank statements, income proof, tax papers and a signed sponsor letter. Who is allowed to sponsor you is set by each country, and the UK is much stricter than Canada, Australia or the US.

UK: parents, legal guardian or official sponsor only

Under Appendix Finance (FIN 5.1), money must be in your own name, or your partner’s if they are applying with you, or your parent’s or legal guardian’s. If it is a parent’s or guardian’s account, you must provide proof of the relationship and their written consent to use the funds (FIN 5.3). Money in an uncle’s, aunt’s, brother’s or grandparent’s account does not meet these rules.

The other route is an official financial sponsor, which Appendix Finance limits to His Majesty’s Government, your national government, the British Council, an international organisation, an international company, a university or an independent school. A relative or family friend is not an official financial sponsor. If the sponsorship is not shown on your CAS, you need a sponsor letter with the date, the sponsor’s name and contact details, the length of sponsorship and the amount (or confirmation that all fees and living costs are covered).

Canada: a letter plus proof of relationship and ID

IRCC’s proof of financial support page accepts “a letter from the person or institution giving you money”. That letter should state their employment, their relationship to you, how many dependants they support, and how much they will give. Add proof of the relationship and a copy of their photo ID or proof of business registration. Six months of bank statements showing the source of income, pay stubs, pension documents and rental income proof are also listed as examples.

Australia: show the relationship and the history

Home Affairs’ genuine access to funds page says that when someone else provides funds, you should give evidence of your relationship with them, their identity documents, and any history of financial support they have given you. You must explain any recent large deposits and ongoing deposits such as wages. If a business is involved, show that it is operating. See our Australia financial documents guide for the full checklist.

USA: the I-20 and evidence of how you will pay

For an F-1 visa, your university first checks your funding and records it on the Form I-20. Study in the States says no federal regulation specifies what financial evidence is required, and gives family bank statements, sponsor documentation and financial aid letters as examples. At the interview, the State Department says the officer may ask for evidence of how you will pay all educational, living and travel costs. Form I-134 is not on the State Department’s student visa document list; follow your university’s I-20 instructions instead. More in our F-1 financial documents guide.

These are the documents Nepali families usually prepare. Not every country asks for every item, but having them ready avoids delays.

  • Relationship verification certificate (नाता प्रमाणित). Issued by your ward office (वडा कार्यालय). It names the student and the sponsor and states the relationship. Formats, fees and the documents you must bring differ by municipality, so check your ward’s citizen charter (नागरिक वडापत्र). If your country needs English, ask whether the ward can issue an English version or get a proper translation.
  • Sponsor’s citizenship certificate and/or passport. Canada and Australia both ask for the sponsor’s identity documents.
  • Bank statements and a balance certificate. Usually from the sponsor’s account, covering the period your country asks for (for example, six months is one of IRCC’s examples).
  • Income source documents. Salary certificate and payslips, rental agreements, business registration and audited accounts, pension papers, or foreign employment and remittance records, depending on how the sponsor earns.
  • Tax documents. Tax clearance certificates or tax payment receipts. Nepal’s Inland Revenue Department has an online tax clearance search by PAN, fiscal year and clearance number, which makes these documents easy to check.
  • Sponsor letter or affidavit of support. A signed letter stating the relationship, the amount, what it covers (tuition, living costs, travel) and the sponsor’s contact details.
  • Written consent to use the funds, if the money is in a parent’s or guardian’s name (required for the UK).
  • Property and valuation papers, if the family is showing assets or using land as loan collateral. These support the story but are not cash.

How to write the sponsor letter

Keep it short, factual and signed. IRCC’s list of what the letter should state is a good template for any country:

  1. Sponsor’s full name, address, phone and email.
  2. Relationship to the student (match the ward certificate exactly).
  3. Sponsor’s job or business and annual income.
  4. Number of dependants the sponsor supports.
  5. The amount promised and what it covers, per year and for the full course.
  6. Which accounts the money is in, matching the bank statements.
  7. Date and signature. If you notarise it, keep the notary stamp clear.

For the UK, if a parent’s money is used, the consent letter should state that they agree to you using the funds for your studies. Do not write promises the bank statements cannot back up.

Nepal-specific tips

  • Names must match. Check spelling of names, dates of birth and addresses across citizenship, passport, ward certificate, bank statements and the sponsor letter. A mismatch between “Kumar” and “Kr.” can trigger questions.
  • Old and new addresses. If your citizenship shows an old VDC or ward name, make sure the ward certificate shows both the old and current address.
  • Remittance income. If a family member abroad is sending money, keep the transfer records that show it arrived through official channels.
  • Large new deposits. Australia explicitly asks you to explain them. Keep the sale deed, loan papers or other proof for any big deposit.
  • Translations. If a document is only in Nepali, get a proper English translation as your country requires.

Common mistakes

  • Using an uncle’s or grandparent’s account for a UK application. The UK only accepts parents or legal guardians (or an official sponsor).
  • Too many sponsors. Five relatives each giving a small amount is harder to explain than one or two clear sponsors.
  • Income that doesn’t match the balance. If the sponsor earns little but the account suddenly holds crores, expect questions.
  • Sponsor letter with no numbers. State the amount and what it covers.
  • Forgetting tax papers. Income that does not appear in tax records is harder to prove.

What to do next

Decide who will sponsor you based on your country’s rules, then collect the ward certificate, income papers and bank statements in one folder. Check the total you need with how much bank balance you need to study abroad, and if you are applying to Canada, explain your sponsor’s role in your letter of explanation.

Frequently asked questions

Can my uncle sponsor me for a UK student visa?
Not with money in his own account. Appendix Finance only allows funds in your name, your applying partner’s name, or your parent’s or legal guardian’s name, or from an official financial sponsor.

What documents does a sponsor need for a Canada study permit?
IRCC lists a letter from the sponsor stating their employment, relationship, number of dependants and amount of support, plus proof of relationship and their photo ID or business registration. Bank statements and income proof help.

Where do I get a relationship verification certificate in Nepal?
From your ward office (वडा कार्यालय). Bring citizenship certificates of the people named; the exact list and fee depend on your municipality.

Can siblings sponsor an Australian student visa?
Home Affairs allows someone else to provide funds if you show the relationship, their identity documents, any history of support, and explain large deposits.

Do I need Form I-134 for an F-1 visa?
It is not on the State Department’s student visa document list. Your university reviews funding for the I-20, and the officer may ask how you will pay all costs.
