Before you apply: what must already be in place

The visa form itself takes an evening. The slow part is everything that has to exist before you open it. Study Australia’s official visa application process page lists the pieces in this order: letter of offer, CoE, English evidence, Genuine Student answers, financial capacity, OSHC, health and character, then lodging in ImmiAccount.

  • A valid passport. Your name and date of birth must match across your passport, CoE and academic documents.
  • A CoE for every course. If you are packaging English (ELICOS) or a diploma with a degree, you need a CoE for each one. Our CoE explained guide covers packaging, gaps between courses and what to do if a CoE is cancelled.
  • OSHC. Overseas Student Health Cover for the whole visa period. Study Australia is blunt: if you do not provide proof of this insurance, your application will be refused. See OSHC cost for Nepali students.
  • English test results, if your provider and the visa evidence rules require them.
  • Financial documents from registered financial institutions, with a clear source of funds.
  • Genuine Student (GS) answers written by you, about your circumstances, why this course, why Australia and how it fits your study history.

Use the Home Affairs Document Checklist Tool with your passport country (Nepal) and your provider. It tells you which financial and English evidence you must attach. Study Australia says these evidence levels were last updated on 30 September 2026, and that Home Affairs does not publish country or provider levels, so always run the tool yourself close to lodging.

How to apply for the Australian Student visa from Nepal, step by step

  1. Accept your offer and get your CoE. Read the letter of offer carefully, sign the written agreement, pay the deposit your provider asks for, and wait for the CoE by email. Check every detail on it.
  2. Arrange OSHC from an approved insurer (or through your provider) so it covers the full visa period.
  3. Run the Document Checklist Tool and build a folder of scanned PDFs: passport bio page, CoE, academic transcripts and certificates, English test result, financial evidence, OSHC proof and your sponsor documents.
  4. Create an ImmiAccount at the official Home Affairs site. Use your own email address, not an agent’s, so you keep control of your application and messages.
  5. Fill in the Student visa (subclass 500) form. Enter your CoE code(s), answer the GS questions in your own words, and declare your health and character honestly.
  6. Attach your documents in the right categories. Clear, complete scans prevent requests for more information later.
  7. Pay the AUD 2,500 charge by card in ImmiAccount. Keep the payment receipt and the acknowledgement of your application.
  8. Give biometrics in Kathmandu. All applicants in Nepal must give a face photo and fingerprints for each application, at the Australian Biometrics Collection Centre. Book through VFS Global, Home Affairs’ service partner.
  9. Do the health examination if asked. Home Affairs gives you a HAP ID, and you book a panel clinic. Our health examination guide explains the process.
  10. Watch ImmiAccount. Respond quickly to any request for information, and upload a new CoE straight away if your start date changes.
  11. Get your grant letter, read the conditions on it, and only then book flights.

Visa fee: AUD 2,500 from 1 July 2026

Study Australia confirmed on 3 July 2026 that the Student visa application charge rose from AUD 2,000 to AUD 2,500 from 1 July 2026. Nepal is not on the exemption lists (these cover certain ASEAN, Pacific and Timor-Leste passport holders, and independent ELICOS and non-award students). At the NRB selling rate on 17 October 2026, AUD 2,500 is about Rs 2,64,925.

This fee is separate from the money you must show. It does not count towards your AUD 29,710 living-cost requirement. Biometrics, the health exam, English tests and OSHC are extra. Our Australia student visa cost guide puts the full first-year budget in rupees. Check the current charge with the Home Affairs pricing estimator on the day you pay, because charges can change.

Biometrics and health exam: the Nepal part

The Australian Embassy in Nepal says all applicants in Nepal must give biometrics (a face photograph and fingerprint scan) for each application, unless excluded or exempt. Appointments are made through VFS Global for the Australian Biometrics Collection Centre in Kathmandu. Pre-lodgement questions go to VFS; questions after you lodge go to the High Commission in New Delhi, which manages applications from Nepal, through the Home Affairs web form.

For health, the Embassy says there are currently six Australian panel clinics in Nepal, and it is working to add more because of the surge in caseload. If you cannot finish biometrics or a health check in time, Study Australia says to attach evidence of the steps you have taken in ImmiAccount before the deadline Home Affairs gives you.

Processing: what decides how fast you hear back

Home Affairs publishes processing times as a guide based on recently decided applications, not a promise for yours. Check the current figure in the Global visa processing times tool for subclass 500 and your sector.

Speed for offshore applications is also shaped by Ministerial Direction 115, which applies to Student visa applications lodged outside Australia on or after 14 November 2025. Your priority depends on your main provider: Priority 1 while it is below 80% of its new overseas student allocation, Priority 2 once it reaches 80%, and Priority 3 once it is 15% over. Home Affairs states that a Ministerial Direction “is not a visa cap” and does not decide grant or refusal. Ask your provider in writing about its position before you pay a deposit.

Visa conditions once you are granted

  • Work: up to 48 hours per fortnight while your course is in session; unlimited during scheduled course breaks. You cannot work before your course starts.
  • Enrolment: stay enrolled and meet your course requirements, with satisfactory attendance and progress.
  • OSHC: keep it for the required period.
  • Address: give your provider your residential address within seven days of arriving.
  • Changes: moving to another provider or a lower-level course can need a new visa. Read changing course or provider before you move.

Points that matter for Nepali applicants

  • Apply from Nepal. From 2 October 2026, most temporary visa holders can no longer apply for a Student visa inside Australia, and family members generally can no longer be included. If you must apply outside Australia, you must also be outside Australia when the visa is granted.
  • Business audit reports are not accepted. The Australian High Commission says self-assessed financial claims, including audit reports, get no weight. Use bank records and government documents such as tax clearance certificates.
  • NOC. Paying tuition from Nepal needs the Ministry of Education’s No Objection Certificate.
  • Your own ImmiAccount. Study Australia says you do not need an agent to lodge. If you use one, check they are registered and that you can see your own account.
  • Write your own GS answers. Copied answers are easy to spot. Our Genuine Student answers guide shows how to structure them.

Common mistakes that delay or sink an application

  • Lodging with an offer letter instead of a CoE.
  • OSHC that ends before the visa period, or no OSHC proof at all.
  • Large unexplained deposits in the bank statement shortly before lodging.
  • Relying on an audit report or self-declared income.
  • GS answers that do not match your transcripts, gap or work history.
  • Missing the biometrics or health deadline without telling Home Affairs.
  • Booking flights or resigning from a job before the grant.

What to do next

  1. Confirm your provider and course on CRICOS and ask about its processing priority in writing.
  2. Run the Document Checklist Tool for Nepal and your provider.
  3. Get your CoE and OSHC, then lodge in your own ImmiAccount and pay AUD 2,500.
  4. Book biometrics with VFS in Kathmandu as soon as Home Affairs asks.
  5. Add up the whole first-year budget in rupees before you pay any deposit.
