Australia Genuine Student Requirement: How to Answer the 4 Questions (With Examples)

Since 23 March 2024, Australian student visa applicants answer four short questions under the Genuine Student (GS) requirement. Each answer can be up to 150 words. This guide shows how to structure your Genuine Student requirement answers and what evidence makes them believable.

The four questions
- Details of your current circumstances: ties to family, community and employment, and your economic situation
- Why you want to study this course in Australia with this education provider
- How completing the course will benefit you
- Any other relevant information you want to include
Question 1: Your circumstances
Weak: “I have a strong family in Nepal and I love my country.”
Stronger (fictional example): “I live in Pokhara with my parents and younger sister. I have worked for two years as a junior accountant at a local trading company, and my employer has confirmed in writing that I can return. My father runs a hardware shop whose income is shown in the attached tax records.”
Specific, checkable facts backed by documents are what count.
Question 2: Why this course and provider
Name the course, the specific units or skills, and why this provider suits you: location, course structure, industry links or cost. Explain why a similar course in Nepal does not meet your goal, without criticising Nepal.
Question 3: How the course benefits you
Link the course to a realistic next step, such as a role, promotion or business plan, and support it with evidence like job advertisements, an employer letter or salary information where you have it.
Question 4: Anything else
Use this for study gaps, a change of field, previous visa refusals or family situations. Short and honest is better than leaving the officer to guess.
Evidence to attach
- Academic transcripts and certificates
- Employment letters and payslips
- Evidence of ties to Nepal (family, property, business, job offer on return)
- Financial documents and tax records
- Any previous Australian study and visa history
Genuine Student requirement: a checklist before you lodge
- Each answer is in your own words and under 150 words.
- Every fact you mention has a document behind it.
- Your course choice follows logically from your studies or work.
- Any study gap is explained in question 4.
- Your financial documents match what you say about funding.
Common mistakes under the Genuine Student requirement
- Copying answers from agents or online samples. Similar wording across applications is easy to spot.
- Writing about Australia’s lifestyle instead of your course.
- Leaving out a previous refusal from any country.
- Choosing a course below your previous qualification without explaining why.
The Genuine Student requirement rewards honest, specific answers. If you cannot support a statement with evidence, leave it out.
