Credit Transfer from a Nepal Bachelor’s to a University Abroad
Yes, you can often get credit transfer from a Nepal bachelor’s (TU, KU, PU or another university) when you continue abroad, but each foreign university decides course by course, and nothing is guaranteed. Universities typically want official transcripts, a grading scale and detailed course outlines, and many US universities ask for a course-by-course evaluation from an agency like WES. Credit usually shortens your degree; it rarely counts for more than half of it.

Key facts about credit transfer from Nepal
| Question | Short answer |
|---|---|
| Who decides? | The university you are applying to, usually its admissions or faculty office. No government sets a national credit rule for you. |
| What do they compare? | Content, level, hours and your grade in each subject against their own courses. |
| Documents usually asked for | Official transcript, grading scale explanation, course outlines or syllabus, and an English translation where needed. |
| Credential evaluation | Often required in the US. WES course-by-course reports cost US$186 (Basic) or US$239 (ICAP) before delivery. |
| How much credit? | Capped by each university. Monash, for example, limits credit to half of a course of up to two years. |
| When to apply? | Before you enrol, ideally with your application, because credit can change your course length and visa paperwork. |
How universities assess credit transfer from a Nepal bachelor’s
Every university publishes its own rules. Two official examples show the typical approach.
USA: University of Michigan. Its transfer credit page says coursework can transfer when it was completed at an accredited college or university, is of similar rigour and content to Michigan’s courses, and you earned a C or better. Close matches get “equivalent” credit; others may get departmental credit. Anyone who has attended college after high school applies as a transfer applicant and sends official transcripts from every college attended.
Australia: Monash University. Its credit page asks for an official transcript (not a results slip or printout), an explanation of the grading system, and a unit outline showing learning outcomes and assessment for each subject. Credit is capped by course length: up to 24 credit points on a 1-year course, 48 on a 2-year course and 96 on a 3-year course. Assessment takes 10 to 20 working days, longer at peak times, so apply early.
Canada and the UK. Universities in both countries also assess credit themselves, under different names: “transfer credit” in Canada, and “advanced entry” or “recognition of prior learning” in many UK universities. Find the page on your chosen university’s own site and follow its document list exactly.
WES course-by-course evaluation: when you need it
Many US universities ask international transfer applicants for an evaluation from a credential evaluation service. WES’s evaluation and fees page describes the Course-by-Course report as listing every post-secondary course with a US semester credit and grade equivalent, a US GPA and whether each course is upper or lower level. WES says it is suitable for transfer and graduate admissions.
- Course-by-Course Basic: US$186 (about Rs 28,317)
- Course-by-Course ICAP: US$239 (about Rs 36,385)
- Delivery is extra.
Rupee amounts use the NRB selling rate, 17 Oct 2026. Check which evaluator your university accepts before paying: some accept several services, some only one. The WES report for Canadian immigration (ECA) is a different product, used for Express Entry, not for university credit. Step-by-step: applying for credit transfer from Nepal
- Find the transfer or credit page of each university on your list and note its document list, deadlines and credit cap.
- Request official transcripts for every year or semester from your university (TU, KU, PU, Pokhara, Purbanchal or other), in sealed envelopes if the foreign university or evaluator asks.
- Collect the syllabus for each subject: course content, credit hours, teaching hours and assessment. Ask your campus or university office for an official copy; a photocopied book page is weak evidence.
- Get certified translations of anything not in English. See our guide to notary, translation and attestation in Nepal.
- Order a credential evaluation if the university requires it.
- Submit the credit request with your admission application or as soon as you are offered a place.
- Get the result in writing before you accept the offer, and check the new course length and fees.
How credit transfer affects your visa
- USA: if you are in Nepal, you apply as a new F-1 student with a new I-20, even though the university calls you a “transfer applicant”. A SEVIS transfer is only for students already in F-1 status in the US; see our SEVIS transfer guide if that is you.
- Australia: credit can shorten your course. Ask your provider to confirm that the course dates on your Confirmation of Enrolment reflect the credit you accepted, because your visa is linked to that enrolment.
- Canada and the UK: your letter of acceptance or CAS should reflect the program and length you will actually study. A shorter program can affect post-study work eligibility, so check the PGWP or Graduate route rules before you accept credit that shortens your course.
Nepal-specific tips
- Incomplete bachelor’s? You can still ask for credit for the years you passed. Explain the reason and the time since in your statement; our study gap explanation guide helps.
- Annual vs semester system. If your programme used yearly exams rather than semesters with credit hours, include the official marking scheme and the teaching hours per subject so the evaluator can convert it.
- Failed and re-sat papers. Your transcript may show more than one attempt. Do not hide this; universities verify transcripts.
- Inside Nepal. The University Grants Commission published an Academic Credit Bank Establishment and Operation Directive 2082 on its website. Its full text was not available when we checked, so we cannot yet say how it affects transfers abroad.
Questions to ask the university before you accept
Send these by email to the admissions or credit office and keep the replies. A written answer protects you if the decision changes after you arrive.
- Do you accept credit from my Nepali university, and is there a list of previous decisions for it?
- Which credential evaluation service and report type do you accept?
- What is the maximum credit I can receive, and how much of the degree must I complete with you?
- Is the decision final at offer stage, or can it change after enrolment?
- How many years and how many semesters will I study after credit, and what is the new total tuition?
- Will the shortened course still meet the minimum length for post-study work in your country?
- Are any credited subjects excluded from my final grade or degree classification?
Compare the answers across universities. A larger credit offer is not always better: if it cuts your study period below a post-study work threshold, or leaves you with gaps in core knowledge, a slightly longer course can be the smarter choice for your career and your visa file.
Common mistakes
- Assuming a 3-year or 4-year Nepali degree will “count as” a set number of years abroad without asking.
- Sending a marksheet without the syllabus.
- Accepting an offer before the credit decision is in writing.
- Paying for the wrong WES product (ECA instead of course-by-course, or the reverse).
- Believing an agent’s promise of “direct second-year entry” that the university has not confirmed.

Frequently asked questions
Can I transfer my TU bachelor’s credits to a US university?
Often, partly. The US university decides course by course, usually after a course-by-course evaluation. University of Michigan, for example, needs an accredited institution, similar content and a C or better.
How many credits can I transfer to Australia?
Each university sets a cap. Monash allows up to half of a course of two years or less, and up to 96 credit points on a 3-year course.
Do I need WES for credit transfer?
Many US universities require an evaluation from an approved agency, often a course-by-course report. Check the list your university accepts before paying.
Is it a SEVIS transfer if I studied in Nepal?
No. A SEVIS transfer only applies to students already in the US in F-1 status. From Nepal, you apply for a new F-1 visa with a new I-20.
Can I get credit for an incomplete bachelor’s from Nepal?
You can ask. Universities assess the subjects you passed; what you get depends on their rules and the match with their courses.
