Return to Nepal After Study Abroad: Equivalence and Licences
If you return to Nepal after study abroad, your foreign degree is recognised through an equivalence certificate, and since 1 Shrawan 2083 (mid-July 2026) that work is done by the University Grants Commission (UGC), not by Tribhuvan University’s Curriculum Development Centre. Doctors, nurses and engineers also need registration from their professional council (Nepal Medical Council, Nepal Nursing Council or Nepal Engineering Council), which usually means passing a licensing exam.

Recognising a foreign degree in Nepal: the UGC equivalence change
For years, students returning to Nepal took their foreign degree to Tribhuvan University’s Curriculum Development Centre for an equivalence letter. That changed in 2026. A notice on the TU CDC website says that, under a new arrangement, equivalence for higher education degrees will be handled by the University Grants Commission from 1 Shrawan 2083, and the Centre will not accept equivalence applications from 2083/04/01 onwards.
The UGC website now lists “Higher Education Equivalence” (उच्च शिक्षा समकक्षता) under its services, linking to a separate equivalence portal, and has posted a notice on granting equivalence dated 2 Shrawan 2083. We could not open the portal or read the notice body when we checked, so we cannot confirm the exact document list, fee or processing time. Contact UGC before you apply:
- Address: Sanothimi, Bhaktapur
- Email: ugc@ugcnepal.edu.np
- Phone: 6638548, 6638549, 6638550
If you applied to TU CDC before the change, watch the CDC site. It posted notices in September 2026 about collecting equivalence certificates and about additional documents for equivalence. The CDC helpdesk is helpdesk.cdc@tu.edu.np or 01-4334041.
When you need an equivalence certificate
An equivalence letter tells a Nepali employer, university or public body what your foreign qualification is equal to in Nepal’s system. Situations where you may be asked for one include when you:
- apply for government or public-sector jobs;
- enrol in further study at a Nepali university;
- apply to a professional council for registration;
- apply for teaching posts in colleges and universities.
Private employers may not ask, but having the letter early saves you time later. The employer or body you are applying to decides what it needs, so ask them.
Doctors and nurses: NMC and NNC licensing
Nepal Medical Council. The NMC website runs exam notices, an online “Apply exam” system and a certificate portal at doctor.nmc.org.np, and lists the Nepal Medical Council Act and Regulation. Foreign medical graduates should read the current exam notice and fee page before applying. Some NMC pages were showing errors or maintenance messages when we checked, so if a page does not load, contact nmc@nmc.org.np or +977-1-4371954.
Nepal Nursing Council. The NNC website offers a “New Registration / Licensing Exam” service through its online application system. Its statistics show 858 foreign nurse and midwife registrations out of 129,420 in total (updated 27 September 2026), so foreign-trained nurses do register. NNC publishes a yearly licensing exam calendar for PCL Nursing, B.Sc. Nursing, Midwifery and specialist nurses; the 2026 calendar runs to 31 December 2026. Contact info@nnc.org.np or 01-4372521.
Planning to study medicine or nursing abroad? Check the council’s rules before you enrol, not after you graduate. Ask the council in writing whether your intended course and institution will make you eligible for its licensing exam.
Engineers: Nepal Engineering Council registration
The Nepal Engineering Council describes itself as a statutory body established to regulate and promote the engineering profession in Nepal. Its site has a dedicated Foreign Registration Process page, an online registration portal (register.nec.gov.np) and a licence exam with its own support email (exam_support@nec.gov.np). The foreign registration page was blank when we checked, so ask NEC directly what a foreign-degree holder must submit. Contact info@nec.gov.np or 01-4520655.
Documents to bring home from your university abroad
UGC and the councils will set their own lists, but these are the papers most likely to be useful. Request them while you still have access to your university account and can visit the registry in person.
| Document | Why it helps | Tip |
|---|---|---|
| Degree certificate (original) | Proves the award and the date | Never post your only original; carry it by hand |
| Official final transcript | Shows subjects, credits and grades | Ask for two or three sealed copies |
| Course descriptions or module handbook | Lets an evaluator compare content and level | Download the version for your actual years of study |
| Diploma supplement or grading scale, if issued | Explains the grading system | Some universities issue this only on request |
| Clinical or practical placement records | Often needed for health and engineering registration | Get signed logbooks before you leave |
| Previous Nepali certificates | Show your full education path (SEE, +2, bachelor’s) | Keep notarised copies together with the foreign documents |
| Passport and visa pages | Show the period you were abroad studying | Scan every page before your passport expires |
If you plan to work abroad for a few years first, still collect these before you graduate. Universities can take weeks to send transcripts overseas, and online portals are sometimes closed to alumni.
Step-by-step: what to do before and after you return
- Before leaving your host country, collect official transcripts, your degree certificate, and course descriptions or a diploma supplement. These are much harder to get once you are back in Nepal.
- Get extra certified copies and keep digital scans.
- Check the foreign-registration requirements of your professional council, if you are in a regulated profession.
- Apply for equivalence through UGC once you have your final documents.
- Register with your council and book its licensing exam if required.
- Update your CV to show both the foreign qualification and its Nepali equivalence.
For notarising or translating documents, see our guide to notary, translation and attestation in Nepal.
Plan for return before you choose a course
If coming home is part of your plan, think about recognition when you choose your course. A degree from an institution on its country’s official register, at a recognised level, is easier to explain to UGC and to employers. Our 15-point course and university checklist shows how to check registration in the USA, Canada, the UK and Australia. If you plan to bring credits the other way, from a Nepali bachelor’s to a degree abroad, see our credit transfer guide.
Common mistakes
- Going to TU CDC for a new equivalence application after mid-July 2026. New applications now go to UGC.
- Leaving the host country without official transcripts and course descriptions.
- Assuming a foreign licence lets you practise in Nepal without NMC, NNC or NEC registration.
- Relying on old forum posts about fees and documents. Both the office and the process changed in 2026.
- Paying a middleman to “speed up” equivalence. Apply through official channels only.
What to do next
Email or phone UGC to confirm the current equivalence document list and fee, and contact your professional council if you work in a regulated field. Keep every reply in writing.
Frequently asked questions
Who gives equivalence for foreign degrees in Nepal now?
The University Grants Commission. TU’s Curriculum Development Centre says UGC handles higher education equivalence from 1 Shrawan 2083, and CDC stopped accepting applications from that date.
Does TU still do equivalence certificates?
Not for new applications from 1 Shrawan 2083. CDC has posted notices for applicants with earlier files about collecting their certificates.
Do foreign MBBS graduates need an exam in Nepal?
To practise, you need Nepal Medical Council registration, and NMC runs licensing exams with an online application system. Check NMC’s latest exam notice for eligibility and documents.
Can nurses trained abroad work in Nepal?
Yes, after registration with the Nepal Nursing Council. NNC’s statistics show 858 foreign nurse and midwife registrations as of 27 September 2026.
How do I register with Nepal Engineering Council with a foreign degree?
NEC has a foreign registration process and an online portal. Contact NEC at info@nec.gov.np for the current document list, as the process page was blank when we checked.
