Master’s vs Bachelor’s Abroad for Nepali Students: 2026 Rules
Master’s vs bachelor’s abroad for Nepali students comes down to three things: family, work rights after study, and total cost. A master’s usually means fewer years of fees and, in Canada, can let your spouse get an open work permit; a bachelor’s gives a longer stay and a full foreign degree from the start. The UK is the big exception on family: since January 2024 only research master’s and PhD students can bring dependants.

Many Nepali families ask, “Should my child go after +2, or finish a bachelor’s here and go for a master’s?” There is no single right answer. This guide compares the rules that actually differ between the two levels in the USA, Canada, the UK and Australia, using only official government sources, and then looks at money and recognition back in Nepal.
Master’s vs bachelor’s abroad: rules at a glance
| Country | Family rule that depends on level | Post-study work |
|---|---|---|
| UK | Only research master’s or PhD students (course 9+ months) can bring dependants; bachelor’s and taught master’s cannot | Graduate route: 2 years if you apply by 31 Dec 2026; 18 months from 1 Jan 2027; PhD 3 years |
| Canada | Spouse open work permit only if student is in a master’s of 16+ months, a doctorate, or certain professional degrees | PGWP: master’s of 8+ months can get 3 years; other programs up to their length (3 years if program is 2+ years) |
| Australia | No level-based family rule covered here; check Home Affairs | 485 Post-Higher Education Work: usually 2 years (bachelor’s, coursework master’s), 3 years (research master’s, PhD) |
| USA | Same at both levels: F-2 spouses cannot get work authorization | OPT up to 12 months per degree level, plus 24-month STEM extension if eligible |
UK: family is the biggest difference
GOV.UK says you may bring dependants if you are a government-sponsored student on a course longer than 6 months, or a full-time student on a postgraduate course (RQF level 7 or above) lasting 9 months or longer. But for postgraduate courses starting on or after 1 January 2024, the course must be “a PhD or other doctorate (RQF level 8)” or “a research-based higher degree”. In practice, a one-year taught MSc or MBA no longer lets most Nepali students bring a spouse. A bachelor’s never did.
Post-study work is the same for both levels. The Graduate visa lasts 2 years if you apply on or before 31 December 2026 and 18 months if you apply on or after 1 January 2027; PhD graduates get 3 years. A UK master’s that finishes in late 2027 will therefore lead to the 18-month version. See our Graduate visa 18-month guide.
For money, GOV.UK currently asks you to show £1,529 a month in London or £1,171 a month elsewhere, for up to 9 months. That is £10,539 outside London, about Rs 21.39 lakh at the NRB selling rate on 17 October 2026 (£1 = Rs 202.99). The government has laid rule changes (HC 584) that increase this requirement from 30 November 2026, so check GOV.UK for the new figures if you apply on or after that date. The figure is per application, not per year of study, but a 3-year bachelor’s means three years of tuition and living costs to fund in real life.
Canada: master’s length matters for your spouse
IRCC’s page on spouses of students says that, starting 21 January 2025, a spouse or common-law partner may get an open work permit only if the student is “studying in a master’s degree program of 16 months or longer”, a doctoral program, certain professional degrees (such as MD, law, DVM or BEd) or a listed eligible program. A spouse of an undergraduate student, or of a student in a 12-month master’s, does not qualify on that basis. Read our spousal open work permit guide before choosing a one-year program.
For the PGWP, IRCC says a program of 2 years or more may get a 3-year permit, and a shorter program usually gets a permit up to its own length. Master’s graduates are the exception: “You can apply for a 3-year PGWP, even if your master’s program was less than 2 years”, as long as it was at least 8 months. IRCC also says there are no field-of-study requirements for bachelor’s, master’s or doctoral degree graduates, though they need CLB 7 in English (or NCLC 7 in French) for applications from 1 November 2024.
Proof of funds for a single student outside Quebec is CAD 23,448 a year (excluding tuition and travel) for applications on or after 1 September 2026. That is about Rs 25.22 lakh at the NRB selling rate on 17 October 2026 (CAD 1 = Rs 107.55). Both levels must also check the current study permit cap rules with IRCC.
Australia: research degrees get longer 485 visas
Study Australia says the Temporary Graduate (subclass 485) Post-Higher Education Work stream is “usually between 2 and 3 years, depending on your qualification”, and that you must be “aged 35 years or under when you apply (exceptions apply)”. Monash University’s official careers page breaks it down: bachelor’s (including honours) usually two years, master’s by coursework usually two years, master’s by research and doctorates usually three years.
So in Australia a coursework master’s does not give a longer post-study visa than a bachelor’s. It gives the same, sooner and for fewer years of fees. Age is the bigger issue for Nepali students who work for some years before a master’s: check the age limit and fees in our 485 visa guide.
USA: a second OPT with a master’s
The USCIS Policy Manual says an F-1 student “may be authorized up to 12 months of practical training”, and becomes eligible for another 12 months after moving to a higher educational level. Eligible STEM graduates “may qualify for a 24-month STEM OPT extension”. A Nepali student who does a US bachelor’s and then a US master’s can therefore use OPT twice. The same manual says “F-2s are not eligible for employment authorization”, so a spouse cannot work at either level.
US funding is shown on your I-20, which lists one year of estimated costs set by the school. A four-year bachelor’s means four years of fees, so ask each university about its own scholarships and, for research degrees, funded assistantships.
Cost: years of study matter more than the visa number
Visa rules set a minimum to show, but your real bill is tuition and living costs for every year you study. As a rough framework, without inventing numbers:
- Bachelor’s abroad: more years of tuition and living abroad, paid while family income in Nepal may be the only source. Part-time work helps but is limited by visa rules.
- Bachelor’s in Nepal, master’s abroad: fewer years abroad, cheaper first degree, and often work experience that strengthens your application. Your loan, if any, is smaller.
- Hidden costs: visa fees, health cover and travel are the same per trip whatever the level. Add them to your budget.
Recognition of your foreign degree in Nepal
If you might return to Nepal for a government job, a teaching post or further study, you will usually need your foreign degree formally recognised as equivalent. This responsibility has changed hands. Nepal’s University Grants Commission (UGC) published a notice on 2 Shrawan 2083 about granting equivalence, and it now lists “उच्च शिक्षा समकक्षता” (higher education equivalence) as one of its services, with an online portal at ugcequivalence.edu.np.
We could not open the full UGC notice or the portal today, so we cannot confirm the exact documents, fees or processing times. Check the UGC website directly or contact UGC before you rely on a foreign degree for a job in Nepal. Practical points that apply either way: choose an institution that is properly accredited in its own country, keep your original transcripts and degree certificate safe, and keep course syllabi, which equivalence bodies often ask for.
Which is right for you?
- Married, or planning to marry before going: a 16-month-plus master’s in Canada, or a US master’s (spouse cannot work), is easier than the UK unless you do research.
- Fresh from +2 with strong grades and funds for 3 to 4 years: a bachelor’s abroad gives the longest time to settle, build networks and get local work experience.
- Tight budget: a bachelor’s in Nepal followed by a master’s abroad usually costs less overall.
- Aiming for research: research master’s and PhDs get longer post-study visas in the UK and Australia and allow dependants in the UK.
Common mistakes
- Choosing a one-year UK taught master’s expecting to bring a spouse.
- Choosing a 12-month Canadian master’s expecting a spousal work permit (it needs 16 months or longer).
- Assuming a master’s gives a longer 485 visa in Australia. Coursework master’s and bachelor’s are usually both 2 years.
- Ignoring the UK Graduate route cut to 18 months from 1 January 2027.
- Not checking whether the degree will be recognised back in Nepal.

Frequently asked questions
Is it better to do a bachelor’s or master’s abroad from Nepal?
It depends on family, budget and goals. A master’s means fewer years of fees and better family options in Canada; a bachelor’s gives a longer stay abroad. Post-study work is similar for both levels in the UK and Australia.
Can I take my wife to the UK on a master’s student visa?
Only if your course is a research-based higher degree or a PhD (or you are government-sponsored). For courses starting on or after 1 January 2024, taught master’s students cannot bring dependants.
Can my spouse work in Canada if I do a one-year master’s?
Not on the student-spouse basis. IRCC requires a master’s of 16 months or longer, a doctorate, or certain professional programs.
Do I get OPT again after a US master’s if I used it after my bachelor’s?
Yes. USCIS says you can get another 12 months of OPT after moving to a higher educational level.
Who gives equivalence for foreign degrees in Nepal now?
The University Grants Commission lists higher education equivalence as one of its services and has an online equivalence portal. Check its website for the current process.
