F-1 Visa Interview Questions for Nepali Students (and How to Answer Honestly)

What the officer is really checking
Under U.S. law (section 214(b) of the Immigration and Nationality Act), the officer must be satisfied that you are a genuine student, that you can pay for your studies, and that you qualify for the visa. Every question connects to one of those points.
Questions about your study plan
- Why do you want to study in the United States?
- What will you study, and why this major?
- How is this program related to your previous studies or work?
- Why not study this in Nepal?
How to answer: name specific things about the course, such as subjects, labs or projects, and link them to what you studied before. Avoid general praise like “the USA has the best education”.
Questions about your university
- Why did you choose this university?
- How many universities did you apply to? Which ones admitted you?
- Where is your university located?
- Do you know any professors or courses there?
How to answer: know your university’s city, program length and two or three concrete reasons you chose it (curriculum, cost, scholarship, faculty research).
Questions about funding
- Who is sponsoring your education?
- What does your sponsor do, and how much do they earn?
- How much will your first year cost?
- Do you have a scholarship or loan?

- What will you do after graduation?
- Do you have relatives in the USA?
- What ties do you have to Nepal?
How to answer: be truthful. If you have relatives in the USA, say so. Hiding it is far worse than having them. Describe realistic career plans and your family and professional ties.

- Answer the question asked, in one to three sentences.
- Speak in your own words. Officers recognise memorized answers.
- Carry your documents in order, but only hand them over when asked.

Can I bring documents to the F-1 interview?
