IELTS vs PTE for Nepali Students in 2026: Which to Take

For Nepali students in 2026, IELTS vs PTE comes down to which exact version your visa and university accept: both IELTS and PTE Academic are on Australia’s accepted list, the UK wants a UKVI version (IELTS for UKVI or PTE Academic UKVI) unless your university assesses your English itself, and Canada’s post-study work permit accepts IELTS General Training and PTE Core but not the Academic versions. The US student visa has no English test of its own; your university decides. PTE results usually come within two business days; IELTS on computer usually within one to two days.

UK: you usually need the UKVI version

GOV.UK says Student visa applicants must show English at CEFR B2 for degree-level study and B1 below degree level. If you have no other qualifying proof, you need a Secure English Language Test (SELT) from an approved provider. The GOV.UK SELT page (last updated 12 October 2026) lists these approved tests taken outside the UK:

  • IELTS SELT Consortium: IELTS for UKVI, IELTS Life Skills
  • Pearson: PTE Academic UKVI, PTE Home
  • LANGUAGECERT: Academic SELT, General SELT
  • PSI Services: Skills for English UKVI

Results only count if the test was taken at an approved test location, and they are valid for 2 years. GOV.UK does not guarantee a centre in every country; check the official list of approved centres before you book.

There is one big exception. For degree-level study, GOV.UK says your university “can assess your level of English themselves” and may use a different test, as long as the standard is still B2. Home Office sponsor guidance limits this to higher education providers with a track record of compliance; other sponsors must ask for a SELT. So many UK universities accept regular IELTS Academic or PTE Academic for a bachelor’s or master’s. For below-degree courses such as foundation programmes, expect to need a SELT unless you have another accepted proof of English. Always ask the university in writing which version it accepts for your CAS.

Planning to stay and work after your degree? GOV.UK says a degree-level qualification taught in English by a UK institution can itself count as proof of English for a later Skilled Worker application, so you may not need another test.

Canada: think ahead to the PGWP

The Student Direct Stream, which used to require a specific test score, ended on 8 November 2024. All applicants now use the regular study permit stream. IRCC’s study permit document list does not include a language test, so the English requirement comes from your college or university.

The catch is the post-graduation work permit. For PGWP applications submitted on or after 1 November 2024, IRCC requires CLB 7 (bachelor’s, master’s, doctoral and other university programs) or CLB 5 (college, polytechnic and other non-university programs) in all four skills. IRCC’s PGWP documents page accepts only these English tests:

  • CELPIP-General
  • IELTS General Training
  • PTE Core

Results must be less than 2 years old when you apply. IELTS Academic and PTE Academic are not on the list. So a Nepali student who used IELTS Academic for admission will need to sit a second test near graduation. See our guide on PGWP field of study rules for the other PGWP conditions.

Australia: IELTS and PTE Academic are both accepted

The Department of Home Affairs changed its list of approved tests on 7 August 2025. For tests taken on or after that date, its published list includes:

  • IELTS Academic and IELTS General Training
  • PTE Academic
  • TOEFL iBT
  • Cambridge C1 Advanced
  • CELPIP General, Michigan English Test, OET, LANGUAGECERT Academic

Home Affairs also notes that fully online tests, such as IELTS Online and TOEFL iBT Home Edition, are not accepted, and that today’s PTE Academic has different scores from the older test of the same name. PTE Core is not on this list.

We have not listed minimum scores for the Australian Student visa here, because we could not confirm the current score table directly on the Home Affairs Student visa page today. Check the score for your situation on the official Student visa (subclass 500) page and with your university, which may ask for a higher score than the visa. For the rest of the process, see study in Australia from Nepal.

USA: the university decides

The US Department of State’s student visa page does not set an English test. It says a consular officer may ask for “standardized test scores required by your U.S. school.” Which tests and scores are accepted differs by university, so check each admissions page before you book. Our F-1 visa from Nepal guide covers the rest.

IELTS and PTE fees in Nepal

IELTS is delivered in Nepal by both IDP and British Council, and each lists its own prices:

TestIDP NepalBritish Council Nepal
IELTS on computer (Academic / General Training)Rs 33,000Rs 36,000
IELTS on paperRs 36,200Not listed on booking page
IELTS for UKVI on computerRs 28,800Rs 36,400
IELTS for UKVI on paperRs 34,000Not listed on booking page
IELTS Life Skills (A1/B1)Rs 24,000Rs 29,000
Sources: IDP Nepal IELTS test fee page and British Council Nepal IELTS booking page, checked 17 October 2026. IDP says fees are “subject to change without prior notice”. Confirm the price at the moment you book.

PTE fees: Pearson sets PTE prices by country and shows them on its test centres and fees page, paid in the local currency. We could not confirm the current Nepal price on an official Pearson page today, so we have not quoted one. Check pearsonpte.com before booking, and be careful with discount “vouchers” from unofficial sellers.

Results timelines and rescheduling

  • IELTS on computer: IELTS says results usually arrive within 1–2 days; another official IELTS page gives 1–5 days.
  • IELTS on paper: typically within 13 days.
  • PTE Academic: Pearson says most test takers get results within two business days, sometimes up to five working days.
  • PTE rescheduling: allowed only if more than 14 days remain before your test, done through your myPTE account. Cancellation can be done at any time; refund terms follow Pearson’s policy.
  • Validity: UK SELT results are valid for 2 years; Canada’s PGWP needs results less than 2 years old.

How to choose: step by step

  1. Pick your country and course level first. The country decides the version; the course level (degree or below) matters for the UK.
  2. Check each university’s English page. Note the exact test name it accepts (for example “IELTS for UKVI” or “PTE Academic”) and minimum scores.
  3. Think about after graduation. For Canada, plan for IELTS General Training or PTE Core for the PGWP later.
  4. Choose the format you are better at. PTE Academic is a single computer-based session of about 2 hours. IELTS can be taken on computer or on paper. Try official free practice material for both.
  5. Book the exact version. Booking “IELTS Academic” when your UK course needs “IELTS for UKVI” is a costly mistake.
  6. Leave time for a retake before your CAS, CoE or I-20 deadline.

Common mistakes Nepali students make

  • Taking regular IELTS Academic for a UK foundation course that needs a SELT.
  • Assuming an IELTS Academic score will work for Canada’s PGWP. It will not.
  • Taking PTE Core for an Australian Student visa. It is not on Home Affairs’ list.
  • Taking an online-at-home test for Australia. Fully online tests are not accepted.
  • Trusting a fee or score from a poster or social media post instead of the official page.

Frequently asked questions

Is PTE accepted for a UK student visa?
Yes, PTE Academic UKVI is an approved SELT. For degree-level courses, many universities assess English themselves and may accept regular PTE Academic. Ask your university which one it needs.

Is IELTS or PTE better for Canada from Nepal?
For the study permit, your school decides. For the PGWP later, IRCC accepts only IELTS General Training, PTE Core or CELPIP-General in English, not the Academic versions.

Does Australia accept PTE for a student visa?
Yes. PTE Academic is on Home Affairs’ list of accepted tests, along with IELTS Academic and General Training. PTE Core is not.

What is the IELTS fee in Nepal in 2026?
IDP Nepal lists Rs 33,000 for IELTS on computer and Rs 36,200 on paper; British Council Nepal lists Rs 36,000 on computer. UKVI versions are priced separately. Confirm when booking.

How fast are PTE results compared with IELTS?
PTE: usually within two business days. IELTS on computer: usually one to two days. IELTS on paper: typically within 13 days.

Do I need IELTS for a US student visa?
Not for the visa itself. US universities set their own English requirement, and the consular officer may ask for the scores your school required.
