UK Foundation Year and Top-Up Degree Guide for Nepali Students

A UK foundation year, international year one or top-up degree can get a Nepali +2 or diploma holder into a British bachelor’s degree, but each route sits differently under visa rules. Courses below degree level (RQF 3 to 5) need a SELT at B1, count towards a 2-year limit on below-degree study, and allow only 10 hours of term-time work, against 20 hours at degree level. A top-up degree is the final year of a bachelor’s, so it is degree level.

What foundation, international year one and top-up degrees are

Foundation year (International Foundation Programme). A one-year preparation course for students whose school qualifications don’t meet direct-entry requirements for a UK bachelor’s. Nepal’s NEB +2 is often accepted for direct entry at some universities but not others. Home Office sponsor guidance (paragraph 4.30) describes foundation courses as giving “fundamental training in the subject area of the main course as a stepping stone to it”, and says they are not pre-sessional English courses.

Integrated foundation year. Some universities build the foundation year into a four-year bachelor’s. How it is classed for visa purposes depends on how the university sets up your CAS, so ask them directly.

International year one. A programme, often run by a pathway provider with the university, that replaces the first year of a bachelor’s for students whose grades are just below direct entry, then lets you progress to year two.

Top-up degree. Usually a one-year final year that turns an HND or similar qualification into a full bachelor’s (honours) degree. Because it leads to a UK bachelor’s at level 6, it falls under the Immigration Rules definition of degree level study: “a course which leads to a recognised UK bachelor’s degree, or an equivalent qualification at level 6”.

How real universities treat Nepali qualifications

Entry rules are set by each university. Here is what four official pages say today:

  • Aston University (Nepal page): direct entry possible with NEB results (for example, NEB GPA 3.0 equals ABB at A level). If you don’t meet direct entry, Aston offers a one-year International Foundation Programme with guaranteed progression, or the International Year One route through OnCampus if your grades are marginally below. Bachelor’s holders who don’t meet master’s entry can take a one-year Pre-Masters.
  • University of East London (Nepal page): undergraduate entry with Higher Secondary (Year 12) at GPA 2.8 / 60% / B or above, a recognised International Foundation course, or a CTEVT Nepal Diploma with First Division (65–79%).
  • University of West London (Nepal page): undergraduate entry with Higher Secondary at 60% or CGPA 2.5, or a Tribhuvan University or CTEVT diploma; second-year entry for UK HND holders with a merit profile; integrated foundation year entry with a Proficiency Certificate or Higher Secondary.
  • University of Chichester (international top-up degrees): one-year full-time programmes for students holding an HND or an associate overseas degree, leading to a full BA or BSc (Hons).

Notice that a Nepali CTEVT diploma is listed as first-year entry at UEL and UWL, not as top-up entry. Do not assume a three-year Nepali diploma lets you “top up” in one year. Ask the university, in writing, which year you would enter.

CAS and visa rules you must know

The GOV.UK Student visa course page sets the levels: full-time below degree courses at RQF 3, 4 or 5 must have at least 15 hours a week of organised daytime study, and degree-level courses are RQF 6, 7 or 8. The level printed on your CAS decides which rules apply to you.

English: a SELT for below-degree courses

The Home Office Student Sponsor Guidance, Document 2 says students on courses at RQF 2 to 5 must provide a recent Secure English Language Test showing at least B1 in all four components, whether or not the sponsor is a university with a track record of compliance. That means an MOI letter or NEB English grade generally can’t replace a SELT for a standalone foundation course. For degree-level options, see studying in the UK without IELTS.

Time limits: 2 years below degree, 5 years at degree level

Appendix Student ST 19.1 says you cannot have more than two years’ permission as a Student, from age 18, to study courses below degree level. ST 19.3 sets five years for degree-level study, with exceptions in ST 19.4 for subjects like medicine, dentistry, veterinary science and architecture. GOV.UK adds that your course length and any study already completed in the UK affect the exact limit.

In practice: a one-year foundation uses one of your two below-degree years. If you fail and need to repeat, or then try a below-degree diploma, you can run out of time. Plan the whole path before you start.

Work hours: 10 vs 20

ST 26.1 allows full-time below-degree students at a higher education provider with a track record of compliance to work 10 hours a week in term time, and degree-level students 20 hours a week, with full-time work outside term. Students at other sponsors or studying part-time can’t work. Families relying on part-time income should note that a foundation year halves the hours allowed. More detail is in our UK student visa work hours guide.

Moving from foundation to degree

If your foundation CAS is separate from your degree, you’ll need a new CAS and a new visa application for the degree. Inside the UK this means meeting the academic progress rule, which a move from foundation to bachelor’s normally satisfies because the new course is at a higher level. See our guide to extending a UK Student visa inside the UK.

Which route fits a Nepali student?

  • +2 with good grades: check direct entry first. Many universities accept NEB for year one, which saves a year of fees and keeps you at degree level.
  • +2 with lower grades: a foundation year or international year one. Compare cost and work-hour rules, and check the guaranteed progression conditions.
  • CTEVT or TU diploma: usually first-year entry; ask about advanced standing.
  • HND or associate degree: a one-year top-up can complete a bachelor’s.
  • Bachelor’s from Nepal below master’s entry: a Pre-Masters may help. Ask what RQF level it will show on your CAS: if it is below RQF 6, the below-degree rules above apply.

Common mistakes

  • Choosing a foundation course without checking if direct entry was possible.
  • Assuming an MOI waiver applies to a below-degree course.
  • Budgeting for 20 hours of work while on a 10-hour course.
  • Ignoring the 2-year below-degree cap when stacking foundation and diploma courses.
  • Believing a Nepali diploma always qualifies for a one-year top-up.

What to do next

Frequently asked questions

Can I work 20 hours on a UK foundation course?
Not usually. A full-time course below degree level at a university with a track record of compliance allows 10 hours a week in term time under Appendix Student ST 26.1.

Is a top-up degree accepted for a UK student visa?
Yes, if it is a full-time course at a licensed sponsor. A top-up leads to a UK bachelor’s at RQF 6, which is degree level.

Do I need IELTS for a UK foundation year from Nepal?
For a standalone below-degree course, Home Office guidance requires a SELT showing B1 in all four components. Check which tests your university accepts.

How long can I study below degree level in the UK?
No more than two years of Student permission from age 18, under ST 19.1 (three years for certain maritime courses).

Can a Nepali +2 student get direct entry to a UK bachelor’s?
Some universities accept NEB results for direct entry. Aston, UEL and UWL all list NEB/Higher Secondary entry criteria on their Nepal pages.
