Study abroad timeline checklist for Nepali students (12–18 months)
For a September (Fall) intake, Nepali students should start 12 to 18 months ahead: research and English tests first, applications about 9 to 12 months before, and visas in the last 3 to 6 months. The fixed official dates to plan around are UCAS deadlines for UK undergraduate entry, the UK rule that you can apply for a Student visa up to 6 months before your course, and the US rule that an F-1 visa can be issued up to 365 days before your program start. This study abroad timeline checklist puts it all in order.
Last checked: 20 October 2026. University deadlines vary, so always confirm on each university’s own site.

If you are reading this in October 2026 and aiming for September 2027, you are about 11 months out. You can still make it, but start the 12-month steps below this week. For UK undergraduate courses, the 15 October 2026 deadline has already passed, so aim for the 13 January 2027 UCAS deadline.
18 to 12 months before: plan and prepare
- Choose country and level. Compare cost, work rules and post-study options. Our destination comparison helps.
- Get or renew your passport. Make sure it will be valid well beyond your planned arrival. See our e-passport guide.
- Book an English test date. Leave time for a retake. See IELTS vs PTE in Nepal. US programs may also ask for GRE or GMAT.
- Collect academic documents. Order your NEB and university transcripts now; they can take weeks. Our guides on NEB documents and TU transcripts cover the steps.
- Start the money plan. Talk to your sponsor about funds, education loans and how long money must sit in the account. See how much bank balance you need.
12 to 9 months before: shortlist and write
- Shortlist 5 to 8 programs and record each deadline, fee, test score and document list in one sheet.
- Take your English test.
- Ask recommenders. See our letter of recommendation guide.
- Draft your SOP or personal statement. See our SOP writing guide.
- Look for scholarships, which often close earlier than admission deadlines.
- Order a credential evaluation if a US or Canadian program asks for one.
9 to 6 months before: apply
- UK undergraduate: submit through UCAS by 13 January 2027 for equal consideration on most courses.
- UK postgraduate: apply directly to universities. Many have rolling admissions, but popular courses can fill early.
- USA: many graduate programs have deadlines between December and February for Fall entry. Check each one.
- Canada: university deadlines for September are often in the winter months. Check each one, plus any program-specific dates.
- Australia: main intakes are usually early in the year with a mid-year intake; some offer later intakes. Check your university’s dates.
- Keep records of every application number and portal login.
6 to 3 months before: accept, pay deposit, start the visa
- Accept one offer and pay any deposit only after checking the university is licensed or approved. See our UK sponsor licence check.
- USA: get your I-20, pay the SEVIS I-901 fee, fill the DS-160 and book an interview. Your visa can be issued up to 365 days before program start, so there is no need to wait.
- UK: get your CAS, do the TB test at an approved clinic, keep funds for the required period, and apply when you are within 6 months of the course start.
- Canada: get your letter of acceptance and PAL/TAL, then apply for the study permit. Book biometrics within 30 days of the letter.
- Australia: get your CoE, arrange OSHC, and apply for the Student visa.
- Nepal side: start the NOC from the Ministry of Education once you have the documents it needs.
3 months to departure: travel and arrival
- Book accommodation and flights only after the visa is granted.
- Check arrival limits: US no more than 30 days before your program start; UK up to 1 month before for courses over 6 months, and never before your visa start date.
- Arrange money transfer for tuition and first months. See sending money between Nepal and abroad.
- Prepare departure documents with our TIA departure checklist.
Nepal-specific timing issues
- Festivals: government offices, banks and campuses slow down around Dashain and Tihar. If your deadline is in December or January, finish document requests before the festivals.
- Results timing: if your NEB or university results come out late, ask universities about conditional offers and when final documents are due.
- Fiscal year end (mid-July): offices can be busy; do not leave bank and tax papers to the last week.
- Bank balance age: some countries look at how long funds have been held, so moving money late can cause problems.
Common timeline mistakes
- Taking the English test too late to retake it.
- Ordering transcripts only after receiving an offer.
- Booking flights before the visa decision.
- Relying on an agent’s word for deadlines instead of the university site.
- Applying for a UK visa more than 6 months before the course, or forgetting the TB test.
