Australia student visa refusal rate in 2026: the headline numbers

• The overall student visa refusal rate was 24.2% in June 2026, the highest in 10 years. In June 2016 it was 7.9% (Home Affairs data reported by ABC, 9 September 2026).
• For the full 2025-26 program year, the refusal rate was more than 51% for Nepal, more than 40% for India and 5.8% for China (same ABC report).
• Offshore higher education refusals reached 32.5% in February 2026, described by SBS as the highest monthly level in about two decades.

These numbers measure different periods and course types, so they are not directly comparable. Always check which period a figure covers before comparing it.

Nepal vs India vs other South Asian countries

The Kathmandu Post reported about 2,700 grants from 7,500 offshore Nepali applications between January and May 2026, compared with 7,167 grants from 8,028 applications in the same months of 2025. Refusals in vocational (VET) courses were around 90% for Nepali applicants in that period. There are about 60,000 Nepali students in Australia, making Nepal the third-largest source country.

What changed: evidence levels and the Genuine Student test

Evidence Level 3. Reports say Nepal and India both moved from Evidence Level 2 to Level 3 on 8 January 2026, along with Bhutan and Bangladesh. At Level 3, applicants generally have to provide full financial and English evidence with the application. The A$2,500 fee you lose if refused

The student visa application charge rose to A$2,500 from 1 July 2026, up from A$2,000. It is not refunded if the visa is refused. With refusal rates this high, a weak application is now an expensive gamble. Some applicants, including ASEAN, Pacific and Timor-Leste primary applicants, are exempt from the full increase.

Refusal letters usually point to one or more of these issues:

• Course choice that does not fit your background. A business diploma after an engineering degree, with no explanation, raises questions.

Why your university choice matters: the 295,000 planning level

The 2027 National Planning Level is 295,000 new international student commencements, the same as 2026. Student visas get priority processing until a provider reaches 80% of its allocation.
